SECTION 55 IPC : Life sentence commuted to a lesser term of imprisonment. Every time a sentence of “imprisonment for life” has been handed down, “the appropriate Government” has the authority to reduce the sentence to “imprisonment of either description for a term not to exceed fourteen years” without the offender’s permission.
