SECTION 7 IPC: Sense of expression once explained – Every expression that is defined in any section of this Code is applied throughout the whole Code in accordance with the definition.

According to two Latin proverbs, “expressio unius est exclusio alterus” and “inclusio unius est exclusio alterus,” expressing one thing entails excluding another. These proverbs serve as the foundation for Section 7 IPC. All people must understand the law in the same way. To prevent misunderstandings, every Act includes an interpretation clause that defines and clarifies the key terms used throughout the Act. A word that appears more than once in a single Act must have the same definition throughout the Act. It indicates that a specific expression must always imply the same thing, i.e., it cannot have any other meaning.
